We are not fast food people. We don’t believe in McDonalds, essentially, and only turn to those kinds of places on vacations. In fact, Burger King is often one of the first places we hit on the way out of town to, well, anywhere, such a treat is all of that greasy salty goodness. Believe me, we get saturated halfway into our first croissandwich, but it is a fun tradition…. So when we pull up to a drive through, it is like vacation for the LJ kids!
We have heard of Krispy Kreme, of course. By now it seems like it is an American institution, like visiting Starbucks or McDonalds. Everyone has gone there, OF COURSE. We have seen the donuts everywhere: Thanksgiving, street fairs, birthday parties, weddings… people love their Classic Krispy Kreme donuts. We have had the opportunity to try them on one or two occasions, declaring them fine but NOTHING in comparison to the gourmet donut that Frost supplies. People said we have to go to the source, though, to get one straight from the fryer, glaze not even set.
So last Saturday found us driving down Aurora Avenue and it just rose in front of us, angels heralding, trumpets blaring, and we knew. This was our moment to become a true American family and finally get our Krispy Kreme on. We went through the drive through. Our kids, so excited, were silent in anticipation. We ordered the half dozen, plain, nothing fancy. And there they were: six Krispy Creme donuts, still warm, glaze not even set yet. Quickly our kids donned the hats, so anxious were they to join the ranks of those who love Krispy Kreme! We handed them each a donut… We tasted them… and yes, they were that creamy, gooey goodness, just like everyone claimed.
I don’t know if I need to return anytime soon, but it was a fun adventure, an inexpensive adventure, and one we can now cross off of our list and say,”Yes, we are Americans, and yes, we went to Krispy Kreme…. Once.”
