Pumpkin carving is big here.  BIG.  Our kids can’t wait until the end of October arrives and they get to carve.  I think it has a lot to do with them being allowed to use a KNIFE to cut out THEIR own designs.  This year they each got to carve two.  Yeah, we are living the high life.

First, it was my job to cut off their tops or bottoms and dig all the guts out.  While the babies don’t have an aversion to cleaning the goo, it does prolong the whole process.  So after they’d gone at it for a while, I took over and scraped the insides.  But honestly?  That is about the only thing I did do to the pumpkins.  From there, Guinevere and Jude took over.

Jude adores pumpkin carving.  Earlier this month we went over to some friends’ house to carve pumpkins for fun.  Once Jude had the little knife in his hand, he sat at the table cutting and re-cutting his pumpkin for a good two hours.  By the time we were finished, the pumpkin had three or four faces on it.  Tonight, he did the same thing, except he just made one face on each pumpkin.  One has a huge mouth with tiny eyes, and the other is a cute little howly face.

Guinevere was less process and more product oriented.  She decided to go with the princess theme – Leia and Rapunzel.  Of course, for Leia’s hair we needed little cinnamon buns that were to be made of mini pumpkins.  That creative little girl came up with that solution on her own.  Clever clever.

By the time they were done, we ended up with Big Mouth, Tiny, Rapunzel and Princess Leia.  Our porch is sure to be the talk of the neighborhood, thanks to our own little creative Halloweeners!
