I always like to document my garden during the summer. Last year we got lots of plants and bulbs, threw them in the ground and stood back to watch them burst to life. They were crowded, but I was hungry for a garden as we had been without for a few years while we were in transition. This year I didn’t buy a whole lot, with the exception of veggies and my delphinium addiction, so I mostly just wanted to see what would come back. A lot of stuff did!
The back yard is my garden. I went all traditional English Garden with the tall spires. I like height in plants, foxgloves, delphinium, gladiolus, things that look pretty and can be cut to bring to class in the fall. I have that. I need to work now on some hard-scaping and moving plants to better highlight and support them. This back area is where I have my happy plants- sunflowers and pumpkin vines- the things that are huge, meandering, need lots of water, staking, fertilizer and don’t look like a whole lot until they actually do their thing. But they offer a lot of wonder.
This is Jude’s pumpkin. He checks on its growth and development daily. Another reason to grow the garden – this science is magic to him!!
Our herb garden got an update this year when last year’s fuchsias started coming up. (we had already purchased a new set of plants for the hanging pots) We were unsure how they would do the second year in so we planted them at the edge of our retaining wall. As you can see they did remarkably well and added a lot of color!
My vegetable garden has been insane this year. People have been complaining of the lack of sun, but my garden was so overgrown by the time we returned from Disneyland that I had lettuce gone to seed, peas were hard and past their prime, I have carrots on, strawberries, beans, salad coming out of my ears and a promising tomato harvest!
Our front yard got all updated and prettified this spring and the plants Bradley selected catch a lot of attention. He used a wide assortment of chartreuse juxtaposed against the darker greens and it is quite striking.
Our porch is not at Becca caliber yet, but it is coming along nicely. The bench was a gift for Mother’s Day, the rail just finishes it off. I’m happy to have a porch; it’s a small thing that makes me feel like I have arrived! 🙂
